Ansel Krieger, born in Altdorf, Duchy of Württemberg, in the spring of 1778, established himself as a cartographer of exceptional, if sometimes unsettling, precision. Initially trained in conventional surveying techniques under Professor Karl von Zephyr at the Heidelberg Collegium, Krieger quickly diverged from established methodologies. His earliest significant works, mapping the intricate waterways and ancient forest paths of the northern Schwarzwald between 18
